A Twenty Tossup Thesis

The editor would like to stress that this is not an article geared towards newer players

Abstract:

The author of this paper urges the reader to ponder, "what is quizbowl," and "what should quizbowl be?" As a game nearly ubiquitously characterized by introducing its players to the new in addition to the trope of "testing knowledge," perhaps quizbowl and its multifacted community could seek to also expand and be inventive in how questions can be asked and ideas be shared and knowledge tested. In a market oversaturated with people competing towards achieving some sort of singular platonic ideal of quizbowl, it is also relevant to consider the benefits of attempting different philosophies. Normalizing unconventional distributions has the potential to better serve sharing the ideas the reader and their team may think the world needs to hear and strengthen the praised grassroots community of quizbowl, provided certain guidelines of quality are met. This project will in all likelihood not be revolutionary, but the author considers the value of thinking more progressively towards what has shaped quizbowl into what it is today and what it could be tomorrow to be worthwhile still. The following will introduce some goals and ideas proposed by the author of this paper for an experiment to be conducted in the following months.

This set will be free to mirror but is experimental in nature and not intended for tournaments wishing to use it for regional or nationals qualifying competitions. For 10 points, name this set.

ANSWER: TAPIR II

Results:

Aimed for release by April - May 2021.

Conclusion:

The author would like to stress that none of the prior implies that quizbowl in its current form is subpar and needs to be replaced, nor that the distribution, focuses and philosophies listed should be followed by others. Leaving away with that thought would be contrary to the intent of the paper. There is a necessity for a standardized market for the existing framework of national competitions that is already fun, challenging, and exciting. The question raised for future trials is whether or not this standard should be ubiquitous, especially as more and more writing projects arise all competing for the same purpose (a topic long covered in other dissertations). As the game grows in the number and diversity of people who play and write, there is no need to limit ourselves into the boxes most convenient for people in the past. The author urges everyone with stories to share to begin re-imagining their projects and the precedent of conformity.
